Maggie is a former Mathematics teacher based in Nottinghamshire. Throughout her teaching career she developed a lasting interest in Outdoor Education gaining a Diploma in Oudoor Education in the mid 1980’s

Her work with schools expeditions goes back to the late 1970’s when she was an assistant leader on a number of expeditions to Norway and Iceland. Awarded a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship in 1991 she visited Norway to carry out Leader Training with a group of Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Holders and to study how the Norwegians supported disabled people in adventurous activities She is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Since 1980 she has been actively involved with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as a trainer, assessor and supervisor in many parts of the UK. She is a former Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Expedition Assessment Panel

For the last 15 years she has been the convener of the Youth Exploration Awards of the Young Explorers’ Trust. These awards are to support young members of youth expeditions from the UK to many remote areas of the world. Recently her contribution to Outdoor Education was recognised when she was awarded the 2013 Young Explorers Trust Stephenson Award. This annual award is given to an individual for outstanding service to youth expeditioning.
