THE TEAM
Karen Darke & Suresh Paul
Karen was a keen runner and mountaineer before she was paralysed in a rock-climbing accident. Since then, she has been committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent disabled people from experiencing the outdoors. Karen worked for Shell as a Learning & Development specialist, and also with the Royal Geographical Society on Inclusive Fieldwork and Expeditions. She now works as a performance coach, motivational speaker and development trainer - www.inspireandimpact.com. Along the way, she has kayaked the coastline of British Columbia and Alaska, hand cycled across the Tien Shan mountains and the Himalayas, and the length of Japan. This journey ino the Arctic wilderness is her most ambitious project to date, and the ultimate test of willpower combined with ingenuity.
Suresh is an award-winning designer and researcher specialising in the development of outdoor and sports equipment for disabled people. He has led five major inclusive expeidtions in the last 7 years all based on the philosophy of "people-led design, desgin-led social change". To meet these aims, Suresh runs a social enterprise, Equal Adventure Developments, www.equaladventure.co.uk and using the knowledge and expertise developed through the expeditions, together Karen and Suresh work in partnership with Interventure and the John Muir Trust to run inclusive activity programmes for disabled people.
