Introductory Sea Kayaking
North Uist, Outer Hebrides
Supported by Equal Adventure Developments and Sportscotland
Sportsmatch, in partnership with the John Muir Award Activities
Programme.
Seventeen aspiring or already addicted kayakers spent seven
days first wobbling, then gliding, through the beautiful sea lochs
of North Uist. The marine and coastal environments of this island
paradise provided varied and sheltered locations to enjoy developing
kayaking skills, and for exploring the scenery, wildlife and ecology
(thanks to input from John Muir Award volunteers). It was a fantastic
week where everybody developed their skills together, thanks to
equipment design ‘on
hand’ from Equal Adventure Developments and supportive and experienced
kayak coaches. The Uist Outdoor Centre was the perfect lochside
accommodation from which to enjoy evening sunsets and playing otters.

Trail Orienteering
Glenmore Forest, Cairngorm National Park
Supported by Equal Adventure Developments and Sportscotland
Sportsmatch, in partnership with the John Muir Award Activities
Programme.
A group
of eight spent a week in Glenmore Forest beneath the peaks and ridges
of the Cairngorm mountains, developing a permanent Trail Orienteering
course so that visitors to the area can enjoy orienteering with
a difference, and develop map reading skills, regardless of any
mobility challenges. Navigating through the woods was used as a
metaphor for ‘internal navigation’ with activities to promote reflection
and personal discovery. We learnt about the balance between recreation
and conservation, particularly in Glenmore Forest, being part of
the new Cairngorm National Park. Thanks to some National Park funding,
we have now developed a permanent Trail O course on the beautiful
lochside ‘all abilities’ trail, starting at the Glenmore Forest
Visitor Centre. A perfect place to learn, or improve your map-reading
and interpretation skills.

We get
a lot of enquiries from disabled individuals who would like to be
more active in an outdoor sport but need some help to get going
either with equipment or basic skills. A collection of experienced
instructors and volunteers enjoyed days throughout the summer with
aspiring canoeists or cyclists, thus encouraging more disabled people
to become more active in sports and the outdoors. The sessions included
canoeing on Loch Insh in the Cairngorms, canoeing on Bassenthwaite
in the Lake District and cycling in the Glenmore area, Cairngorms
National Park. This approach was a pilot in 2004 and has led to
the development of new initiatives by our partner, Equal Adventure
Developments, with Glenmore Lodge National Training Centre to provide
a number of ‘technical skills courses’ for people with disabilities
which complement the other Interventure courses in 2005.
