Activity Modules Overview


Introduction

These modules will help you to:

  • Develop a better understanding of how to deliver inclusive outdoor activities
  • Build on your existing coaching knowledge, skills and experience
  • Create practical solutions to overcome barriers and perceived problems
  • The courses address the needs of national governing bodies, charities, trusts, organisations and local authorities delivering outdoor education, as well as individual activity centres, coaches and instructors.

 

Objectives

  • To evaluate your current practice and resources and develop strategies to deal with the foreseeable needs of your clients in a supported environment
  • To ensure that instructors/coaches are able to operate in an inclusive manner
  • To facilitate the development of skills that will provide inclusive activities to all your clients in a competent and confident manner
  • To help instructors/coaches broaden their current practice
  • To help instructors/coaches develop imaginative solutions to inclusive practice for daily use.

 

Course Content

Select from any of the one day or half day modules to add to the Foundation module:

  • Paddle Sport - Canoeing, Rafting and Kayaking
  • Climbing and Rope-Based Activities
  • Expedition, Field Work and Extended Journey Planning.


These activity modules expand upon the common language and understanding introduced in the Foundation (for further information see previously under Foundation) by exploring specific issues relating to planning, practice, equipment and environment.

Who Should Attend

The course is designed for all front line activity staff (instructors/coaches) and senior instructors, team leaders or managers. Each course is aimed at the general practitioner who is currently running activities, courses or trips. Each course aims to look very functionally at good inclusive practice, and encourages policy and procedure to be improved through its application.

Full day (condensed half day modules can be delivered, please enquire).

General Moving and Handling

 

Introduction

This course provides all employees with the principles of safe moving and handling. It is based on the HSE Better Backs Campaign and illustrates good practice in everyday situations common to the outdoor industry. It explores the legislative requirements and practical application of risk assessments and provides line managers with tools to perform formal assessments which may effect operating procedures. It practically introduces a dynamic risk assessment tool for coaches and instructors to identify solutions and manage risk in ‘out of scope’ situations.

Objectives

  • To provide the skills needed to identify risk, solutions and good handling techniques
  • To understand how the back works, how to look after it and how to stay active
  • To provide the principles of when and how to lift safely, and when and how to avoid lifting
  • To reduce risk and create a health and safety culture
  • To apply the principles of safe moving and handling into your practices.

 

Course Content

The course looks at how the back works and how it can be looked after. It introduces the legislative responsibilities of the employer and employee, and emphasises the need for a health and safety culture within the organisation. Following this introduction a more practical focus is placed on identifying risks, their
reduction and removal.

Who Should Attend

Anyone who is involved within the outdoor industry.

Half day module.

Follow-up

Activity modules address issues of moving and handling people and equipment, specific to each activity.

Policy and Procedures Module

 

Introduction

This module will help decision makers and team leaders to:

  • Review current good practice in operational and support systems
  • Identify appropriate procedures and policies for your organisation
  • Develop practical solutions to strategically implement these changes.

 

Objectives

  • To provide decision makers and team leaders with the resources necessary to operate more inclusively
  • To create inclusive solutions to administration, programming and marketing challenges
  • To establish a framework of inclusive policies and procedures for inclusive practice throughout your organisation.

 

Course Content

This course builds on the Foundation module, looking at issues related to the design and implementation of inclusive procedures and policies. It helps decision makers and team leaders explore the management of change and development of standards of practice that express your organisation’s commitment to inclusion.

Who Should Attend

Centre managers, team leaders (including senior instructors, administration, catering and operations managers) and those responsible for the management of organisations wishing to be more inclusive.

Duration

Two day module.

Centre Access Module

 

Introduction

This module is aimed at senior staff and managers. It reviews the physical and sensory access of facilities and services in light of legislative requirements. It provides practical tools to help understand new legislation and provides a methodology to implement changes in partnership with architects, planners and service users.

Objectives

  • To understand the legislative requirements of current access legislation
  • To develop a basic understanding of inclusive presentation and marketing to help you attract more disabled people to your facility
  • To understand the practical issues of physical and sensory access to facilities
  • To develop a range of strategies to manage conflicts between access and opportunity
  • To spot barriers to participation and identify appropriate ways of removing them.

 

Course Content

This classroom based course develops your understanding of legislation, presenting it in clear and easily understood chunks. The course provides scope for you to assess and action plan your own provision and compliance to legislation.

Centre managers, team leaders (including senior instructors, administration, catering and operations managers) and those responsible for the management of organisations wishing to be more inclusive.

Duration

One day module.
